Publications

Our publications center the work and perspectives of women & non-binary abstract artists of color, provide both personal and critical perspective of abstraction by Black and brown artists, curators, collectors, and critics, and offer the public insights into abstraction as a visual language that’s accessible.

Our flagship publication, Abstractions Magazine, is an annual print art publication offering in-depth profiles of women & non-binary artists of color creating abstract work, alongside editorials on abstraction in modern art through a Black and brown centered perspective.

Free Art Bin

We have bins of small, original abstract artworks made by Black & Brown women and non-binary artists that are 100% free to the public. Originally placed outside of our gallery during open hours, they’re now placed at various locations around the city of Philadelphia-you know, guerrilla style!

From July 2018- June 2020, Tessera operated a contemporary art gallery & studio on Frankford Avenue located in the Kensington neighborhood of North Philadelphia. We displayed abstract & figurative art from over 30 different Black and Brown women & non-binary artists from Philadelphia and around the United States. Our programming included: exhibitions, book signings, pop-up markets, workshops, artist meetups, film screenings, performances, artist talks & salon style conversations, & gallery visits. We supported projects from 2 Leeway Foundation Art & Change grantees as well as events hosted by local and national businesses and organizations including: New Season Books, The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, Arts Administrators of Color Network, and Arts Religion & Culture.
